Retro Device

Time: Ancient Egypt

  • Archaic (Early Dynastic) Period (c. 3100-2686 B.C.)

or

  • (Old Kingdom: Age of the Pyramid Builders (c. 2686-2181 B.C.) <- the chosen specific time period

Object: robot (architectural)

Mindmap/ reference board:

200-300 word paragraph that tells the story of your device:

This will be an architectural robot set in Ancient Egypt (in the Old Kingdom period, c. 2686-2181 B.C.) that will assist the Egyptians in building their pyramids. The robot could be made out of wood or metal like copper. The robot could be either in charge of lifting heavy loads or transporting goods. If it only lifts heavy loads, it would be stuck firmly on the ground and its arm(s) would be crane-like, i.e. only moving horizontally and vertically. If it transports goods, it would have wheels. If it does both, its arms would be crane-like with “scales”/platforms at both ends. This would carry the loads up and down during construction. The wheels would allow it to move and spin 360°. This form resembles a crane and balance scale (but this technology will be ahead of ancient Egyptian time). The wheels could give it a more mechanical/robot resemblance. With the robot, this could mean less intense labor (and injuries) and could speed up the construction process. The colors/form of the robot are inspired by the sun god, Ra, in which it would be painted white, yellow, gold, red (in the depiction of the Eye of Ra), brown and possibly a hint of blue like the pharaoh’s design.
